Martin Herrera is a retired Argentine football goalkeeper. He was born on September 13 1970, in the city of Rio Cuarto in the Cordoba Province of Argentina. He retired after helping Estudiantes de La Plata to win the Apertura 2006 Championship.
Playing career
Herrera started his career with Argentine giants Boca Juniors in 1991 but things didn't work out for him there and he moved to Club Atletico Atlanta of the regionalised 3rd division in 1994. Herrera helped Atlanta to win the Primera B Metropolitana in 1995 and the club were promoted to the 2nd Division.
In 1998 Herrera moved to Mexico to play for Club Toluca but he soon returned to Argentina to play for Ferro Carril Oeste between 1998 and 1999.
In 1999 he moved to Spain to play for CD Alaves in La Liga in his first season with the club he was awarded the Trofeo Zamora, an award for the best goalkeeper in La Liga.
In 2001 Herrera was the goalkeeper for Alaves when they reached the final of the UEFA Cup which they lost 5-4 after extra time to Liverpool F.C.
In 2002 Herrera was signed by English team Fulham F.C. on a 3 year contract but he only ever made 2 appearances for the club before being loaned to Estudiantes and eventually released.
In 2006 he saw Estudiantes win the Apertura championship, defeating his former side Boca Juniors in an end of season title deciding playoff.
