Jose Maria Vernet
Jose Maria Vernet is an Argentine Justicialist Party politician. He was the first democratically elected governor of the province of Santa Fe after the end of the National Reorganization Process, from 11 December 1983 to 11 December 1987. He served as Minister of Foreign Relations (Chancellor) for ad interim president Adolfo Rodriguez Saa during his very brief rule in the last week of 2001, immediately after the December 2001 riots and the resignation of Fernando de la Rua.
Vernet, a qualified accountant, reached the governorship as a compromise between the principal provincial political leaders. By the end of his term there were criticisms of the increase in public spend, and some of his officials had been investigated by the justice system. Later he served as minister of government for Buenos Aires and gained a greater national profile once again under the wing of Carlos Corach, culminating in his appointment by Rodriguez Saa as Foreign Minister in 2001.
