Arauco, Chile
Arauco is a community in Chile, located in Malleco Province in the Araucania Region. The meaning of Arauco means Chalky Water in Mapudungun.
In 1552, Pedro de Valdivia founded a fort on the site, named San Felipe de Araucan. It was destroyed on numerous occasions by the Mapuche during the Arauco War. Population began to gather around this fort and it became the city of Araucan on the 7th of December, 1852.
