Jose Ballivian was a Bolivian general during the Peruvian-Bolivian War and the 9th president of Bolivia from September 27, 1841 to December 23, 1847.
Born in La Paz, Ballivian's early military career is unknown before his defeat of Peruvian General Agustin Gamarra at the Battle of Ingavi on November 20, 1841 and halting Peru's invasion of Bolivia. A national hero following the battle, Ballivian was overwhelmingly elected the 9th President of Bolivia later that year.
