Los Super Elegantes are a musical group formed out of Los Angeles. Their sound has been described as a blend of punk, rock, mariachi, electropop, trip hop and pop.
Biography
The group is comprised of six members: Milena Muzquiz, Martiniano Lopez-Crozet (from Tijuana, Mexico and Buenos Aires, Argentina respectively), Mike Bolger, Ben Kishaba, Kenny Lyon, Dave La Chance (Jason Pipkin alternates with Dave La Chance). Muzquiz and Lopez-Crozet founded the group in 1995. They have mixed original music with theatrical stage improvisations in amusing live performances. Featured in Index, Interview, ArtForum and the Fader, their 2002 album Channelizing Paradise was praised for its quirky, entertaining riffs. In 2004, they performed as part of the Whitney Biennial in New York City and in the Frieze Art Fair in London, England. They have created 5 musical theater pieces The first Pietro Y Paola was performed in a small gallery "Over Here" in 1999. Here they invented a new form of language that is based on sounds inmitating italian. The space had four different sets in each corner of the room they would travel from scene to scene in a small homemade automobile. The second is Angie & Eric who interact with invisible friends, it is a story about coming to Los Angeles and the emptiness of the American culture. The third musical theater piece is The Falling Leaves of St. Pierre, performed at Peres Projects in 2003. It is about saddistic relationships. Tungas House Bar was performed in 2004 at the whitney museum and finally The Technical Vocabulary of an Interior Decorator presented at Dan Hug Gallery in 2005.
Los Super Elegantes have played with Beck, performed a version of Nirvana (band)Nirvana's "Rape Me" in French, DJed throughout Europe and the Americas, and have received significant airplay on several American indie radio stations.
In December 2006, the band's song "Sixteen" was featured on the American iTunes store as a single of the week and was offered as a free download.
The band is currently working on a new album that will be released in 2007.
