She was suspended from congress for four months in May 2007 when a TV program claimed that one of her assistants on the government payroll was her former housekeeper. She was temporally replaced by former congressman Hildebrando Tapia, from the National Unity party.
In March 2008 Canchaya was given a three-year suspended prison sentence and ordered to pay 1000 New Soles in another trial different from the congress affair. She is nowadays appealing the sentence.
