University of the Andes, Chile


The University of the Andes (Uandes) is a private institution located at 2,200 San Carlos de Apoquindo Ave., Santiago, Chile. Along with 16 undergraduate programs, the University has a business school known as ESE, Business School . Soon, The University of the Andes plans to initiate the construction of a University Hospital.

The Medical School is well renown in the country. It always ranks among the first places on the National Medical Exam, which is taken every year by recent graduated medical students.

The Christian formation offered at the University is entrusted to the Catholic Prelature of Opus Dei.

History

The University of the Andes was founded on September 8, 1989. Its first campus was located in Bustamante Aveneu, Providencia, Chile. In 1990 the School of Law opened, followed the next year by the Philosophy School and the Medical School (the first among Chilean private universities). At present the Medical School is one of the best professional schools in Chile, according to yearly press surveys and the National Medical Exam results for the last six years.

Other schools followed: Economics and Business and Nursing and Education, in 1992; Communication and Services Administration, in 1993. In 1994 the University started its PhD program in Philosophy.

In 1992 the University expels a pregnant student from the Nursing school, a decision overturned by the courts.

In 1995 the University relocated to its current campus at 2,200 San Carlos de Apoquindo Avenue, Las Condes. During that same year the Engineering School opened, followed by the Family Science Institute (1996) and the Psychology School (1999). Also in 1999 the Universidad de los Andes Medical Center started operations in the San Bernardo area.

In 2000 the Postgraduate Business School opened, which would come to have its own modern building in 2006.

In 2001 the Education Ministry granted the University its autonomy.

In 2002 the School of Dentistry started functioning, and a 12,500 square feet Library building was inaugurated becoming one of the most modern libraries of South America. In 2002 the University began its PhD program in Law.

In 2003 the Medical School became part of the Asociacion de Facultades de Medicina de Chile (ASOFAMECH), organization in charge of taking and grading the National Medical Exam.

In 2005 three new undergraduate programs started: History, Preschool Education and Electrical Engineering. Also, the School of Law opened its Centro de Derecho del Seguro and the School of Economics and Business started its Centro de Economia de la Empresa.

In 2006 the Postgraduate Business School moved to its new building and the University started to prepare for the accreditation process .

In 2007 the CNA (Comision Nacional de Acreditacion) granted institutional accreditation to the University, valid for five years. During the same year the Communications Department launched the first campus newspaper called 2200, in reference to the Universitys address.

During 2008 the University started the construction of a new building which will house the School of Law and the School of Economics and Business. That same year the School of History published the first volume of Chile en Cuatro Momentos, a literary, historical project about Chilean History, conducted alongside El Mercurio Newspaper and Enersis.

San Carlos de Apoquindo Campus

The University campus is located at the foot of the Los Andes Mountains. It comprises five main buildings: Humanities, Science, Library, ESE and The Clock, which houses the School of Law and the School of Economics and Business. The campus also has a soccer field and a roofed sports facility designed to play soccer, volleyball and hockey.

San Bernardo Medical Center

The Universidad de los Andes Medical Center in San Bernardo is a medical campus of the university. A Mental Health Unit was recently inaugurated to serve adult, youth and child patients.

The medical center also has a 1,800 square meters dental clinic, using the latest technology. On the whole, the campus has a constructed surface of 5,400 square meters.

Jose Enrique Diez Library

The Library is a very modern wrightian inspired building. It is 12,500 square meters and operates with the latest technology. It has the capacity to store 300.000 books and includes more than a thousand internet connections points; it has an auditorium for 330 people and other four for up to 75 people each; it has 23 rooms for study groups, work stations and 28 computers to look up references.

The Library utilizes automation software Millenium, one of the best ones in the world, allowing performance for all the processes: from online book reservations to remote access to databases.

Alumni Los Andes

Alumni Los Andes reunites all the former students of The University of the Andes in Chile, with the intention of maintaining the ties established between them during their university years.

The association was created in 1997 under the name Asociacion de Exalumnos, and changed to Alumni Los Andes at the beginning of 2009. ALUMNI manages an effective and complete network and offers various activities to the former students of UANDES.
