Universidad Adolfo Ibanez

The Adolfo Ibanez University (UAI) is a private university of Chile pertaining to the Adolfo Ibanez Foundation. In 1988, according with the new educational legislation, a new university was founded on the base of the Valparaiso Business School (Escuela de Negocios de Valparaiso), an old institution for the professional teaching in business administration founded in 1993 thanks to the contribution of Adolfo Ibanez Boggiano. The new university would take its name some decades ahead.

In the Chilean higher educational scheme, UAI is a private non-traditional university (is not part of the Chilean Traditional Universities) accredited in the country by CNAP and internationally by AACSB and AMBA.

The Valparaiso Business School (Escuela de Negocios de Valparaiso), was established in 1993 under the protection of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso. It is noted for being the first educational institution in Chile to offer the business administration career, as well as one of pioneers in Latin America.

In 1995, the humanistic subjects were introduced into the career to make a little change in the students of a career like Business administration.

In the early 1970s, the alliance between the business school and the university was broken, and after a few years of autonomy, a new alliance was signed with the Federico Santa Maria Technical University, a new association that would remain until the late 1980s.

In 1979, it became the first business school to introduce an MBA program in Chile.

After the educational reform brought about by the military government, in the last years of the 1980 decade, Adolfo Ibanez University was founded with the business school like central axis. In 1989 the careers of Laws and Engineering were opened, in 1996 Journalism and Pedagogy and in 2002 Psychology. During 2002 the new Penalolen Campus was opened in Santiago.

In 2006, this organization founded the Adolfo Ibanez School of Management [*], settling this school for post-graduate programs in Miami. It is the first Latin-American MBA program, to be certified by the US government.

In March of 2009, this institution settled the arrangements, so the students of the Master in Finance can easily perform the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) international exams, and so obtain their certification, due to the needs that the market has applied to the graduated students. The Economist [*] has already exposed this problem, that the educational institutions should pay attention to.

In April of 2009, it associated with Indian School of Business, for the creation of mutual post-graduate programs, specifically speaking, not only the creation of a international MBA program, but also the exchange of students and teachers between them. The Financial Times establishes this indian institution in the 15th position among the whole globe [*], in matters of post-graduate programs.

The data that concerns to this section has to be divided in different categories, for a proper analysis. First, this institution is actually in these days third in the ranking of universities, evaluation published by the newspaper The Times [[:es:Clasificacion academica de universidades de Chile]], being settled fourth in the national ranking of Chile, both 2008 & 2009, of the journal magazine "Que Pasa" [*] [*]. Second and most important, in what refers to each undergraduate program's, first and most popular in this institution, Business & Administration bachelor program, is ranked second among the whole other universities that offer this option if you take as reference the 2008 [*], and third if you use the data of the 2009 [*], considering not only as reference, the national ranking of the journal magazine "Que Pasa" , but also the international investigation, established in France, known as EdUniversal [*]. Referring to the other programs, the evaluation of defining the better ones is unfortunately limited to the national journal, being the fact that this magazine is the only one that even mentions these other programs. Law school is positioned fifth in the ranking [*], maintaining its position during the 2009 [*]; psychology sixth [*], getting out of the top ten during this year [*]; journalism seventh among the rest of the other universities [*], also keeping his place for the 2009 [*]. Last but not least, Industrial Engineering appear's just in the last one, due to the fact that during the 2008, this program was being changed, making it completely incapable of participating in this ranking for that year. Anyway, it is fifth among the other for the 2009 [*].

Talking about post-graduate programs, this institution is positioned as the best (nationally speaking) and third if we acknowledge those that exist in Latin America [*]. If we discuse the material related to the 2009 [*], the situation changes a little bit; nevertheless, keeping anyway his scores bethween the top ten. Going international, we can settle the positions to what asseverates the Financial Times, putting these post-graduate programs in the 49th place, if we compare these programs to the global competition; fifth in Latin-America, and first in Chile [*].

It's proper to mention that this institution has been ranked consecutively for the last three years, as the university with the greatest prospects in the country in which it is settled [*]

Educational Model

Since 2002, in this institution, the plan was to put in use the model that many prestigious universities use abroad. This is why students now have: a major, minors and fundamental subjects. The major is normally engineering, literature, psychology, etc. The minor can be done in quite different fields, such as: drama, music, philosophy, etc. And the fundamental subjects (which are all the same for every career) have been using successfully for more than 9 years now the US college program.
