Early years
He was born in the city of Arequipa, of a catholic family. He entered into the Congregation of Saint Vincent de Paul, being ordained priest in Paris in 1909.
Bishopric
In 1909, there was nominated an Archbishop of Chachapoyas, a charge that he exercised until 1918, the year in which he assumed the direction of the Church of Lima assuming the Archbishop's charge of Lima and Primate of Peru.
