Campeonato Descentralizado 2009

The 2009 Torneo Descentralizado de Futbol Profesional (known as the Copa Cable Magico for sponsorship reasons) was the ninety-third season season of Peruvian football. A total of 16 teams are competing in the tournament, with Universidad San Martin as the defending champion. The season began on February 14 and is scheduled to end on December 13.

Changes from 2008

Structural changes

The ADFP increased the number of teams from 14 to 16 and removed the Apertura and Clausura format. In this new format, the tournament will be played in three stages. In the first stage, 16 teams will play a total of 30 home-and-away fixtures. The second stage will consist of two groups. All teams that place an odd number will qualify for Group A and teams that place an even number qualify for Group B. The points earned in the first stage will be kept in the second stage and each team will play 14 home-and-away fixtures against the teams in their group. The winner of each group will qualify to the Copa Libertadores and play in the third stage where they will contest the finals for the national champion. Peru was also given a third berth for the Copa Sudamericana.

Promotion and relegation

Atletico Minero and Sport Boys finished the 2008 season in 13th and 14th place, respectively, in the aggregate table and thus were relegated to the Segunda Division. They were replaced by the champion and runner-up teams of the 2008 Segunda Division, Total Clean and Inti Gas Deportes and champion and runner-up teams of the 2008 Copa Peru, Sport Huancayo and Colegio Nacional Iquitos
