National Polytechnic School
The Escuela Politecnica Nacional, also known as EPN, founded in Quito by the president Gabriel Garcia Moreno in 1869, is the second oldest public university in Ecuador.
History
The Escuela Politecnica Nacional was founded on 27 August 1869 by the National Convention of the Ecuador and the President Gabriel Garcia Moreno, to count with an high level science and engineering center.
To achieve this, Garcia Moreno brought German Jesuit religious whom managed the university and the Astronomical Observatory of Quito.
The EPN remained closed during some decades, until 1935, when the President Jose Maria Velasco Ibarra re-opened it.
On 1964, the EPN moved from its campus "La Alameda" to the current Polythecnic Campus, when the rector was Jose Ruben Orellana Ricaurte.
Campus
The current campus, called "Jose Ruben Orellana", is located at the sector center-oriental of Quito. It occupies an area of 15.2 ha and has a built area of around 62.000 m2. Its student population is of around 10.000, and a 30% are women.
At the campus there are some libraries with a content primarily oriented to the engineering and scientific topics.
