2010 Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Futbol Serie A
The 2010 Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Futbol de la Serie A (known as the 2010 Copa Credife Serie A for sponsorship reasons) will be the 52nd season of the Serie A, Ecuador's premier football league. It is scheduled to be run from February 7 to December 12. Deportivo Quito is the defending champion.
Format
A new format for the 2010 season was announced by the Federacion Ecuatoriana de Futbol on December 15, 2009.
The championship will be divided into three stages. The First and Second Stages will be a double round-robin format where the teams play the others twice . The winners of each stage will play a two-legged tie in the Third Stage for the title. The two highest non-stage winners in the aggregate table will play each another in a Third Stage playoff for third place.
Should the same team win both stages, they will automatically be crowned a champion. A two-legged tie will be held between the next best two places in the aggregate table to determine finishes second and third.
The two teams at the bottom of the aggregate table of the first two stages will be relegated to the Serie B.
International qualification
The two stage winners will earn a berth in the 2011 Copa Libertadores. The berth Ecuador 1 will go to the champion, while Ecuador 2 will go to the runner-up. Ecaudor 3 will go to the third place finisher. Teams will also qualify to two Copa Sudamericanas. The top-three teams in the First Stage will qualify to the 2010 Copa Sudamericana . The winner of the Second Stage will earn the Ecuador 1 berth for the 2011 Copa Sudamericana.
Dates
First Stage: February 7 — July 4
Second Stage: July 18 — November 28
Third Stage: December 5 and 12
Teams
Twelve teams will compete in the 2010 Serie A season. Ten teams remained in the 2009 season. LDU Portoviejo and Tecnico Universitario were relegated last season to the Serie B after accumulating the least amount of points in the First and Second Stage aggregate table. They will be replaced by Independiente Jose Teran and Universidad Catolica, the 2009 Serie B winner and runner-up, respectively. This will be Universidad Catolica's 27th season in the Serie A, having last played in the league in 2008. This will be Independiente Jose Teran's first season in the Serie A.
One team will be using a different stadium this season. ESPOLI has chosen to move from Estadio La Cocha in Latacunga to Estadio Etho Vega in Santo Domingo de Los Colorados.
