The Peru national rugby team, nicknamed los Tumis, is a young team in the Americas and a member of the Confederacion Sudamericana de Rugby (Consur).

In 1958 Peru, together with Argentina, Uruguay and Chile participated in the first South American tournament, held in Santiago, Chile. Because there was no IRB-sanctioned rugby union at the time, participation was not officially accepted by Peruvian sport authorities. After this, the impulse of the game seemed to have faded.

In September, 1999 Peru participated in its first official international tournament: the first U21 South American tournament in Asuncion, Paraguay.

In November, 2000 Peru participated on the first South American group B Tournament, in Sao Paulo Brazil, with Brazil and Venezuela.

In 2001 they played rugby World Cup Australia 2003 Qualifying Rounds, against Brazil, Venezuela, and with Colombia, being this last, the first official IRB game to be played and won in Peruvian grounds.

Captain

The current Peruvian captain is their flanker, Giovanni Davies, who is commonly known as "Marijuani", and is also captain for the Lima Llamas. He began his career in 1991, and is currently 35 years of age. He is regarded as the best Peruvian Rugby player ever. Although he is a fantastic rugby player, he has succumb to using performance enhancing drugs in the past, which has in many ways darkened his career.

In breaking news however, Giovanni has just been given 2 weeks notice to resign as captain of the Peru National Rugby team. The reason is because of his split with the infamous John Hopoate, after the pair ended there intense relationship. The team coach, Adrian Bateman said in a press release yesterday that "Giovanni has been the saviour of our team, but must be dropped from the team, as his violent outbursts are creating a bad influence on his fellow team mates. We are very sorry to our supporters, but if our results fall this year, we shall consider it as if we are better off than having such a person on our team."

The Future

Giovanni has recently stated that he's had offers from Australian National Rugby League teams including the Canberra Raiders. Giovanni's agent Kim Betros has stated the move is more than likely. The Canberra Raiders' captain, Alan Tongue, has stated that he doesn't want Davies at the club because of his social problems. However Tongue has no problem with Giovanni going the team as long as his off field problems are sorted out and that he stays the hell away from him.
