El Espectador is a newspaper with national circulation within Colombia. It changed from a daily to a weekly edition in 2001.
El Espectador was founded by Fidel Cano Gutierrez on 22 March 1887 in Medellin. As an opposition paper, it had to face several closures from the conservative government on late 19th century and early 20th century, as well as during the 1950s, during Gustavo Rojas Pinilla's military regime.
