List of political parties in Colombia

This article lists political parties in Colombia.

Colombia has historically maintained a two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties, resulting in considerable difficulty for anybody to achieve major electoral success under the banner of any other party. Dissidents from the two main parties also have chances to win elections. Members of independent parties may be elected to regional or local office and may also win seats in Congress. Nowadays it is a multi-party system.

The parties

Traditional parties

  • Colombian Conservative Party (Partido Conservador Colombiano)
  • Colombian Liberal Party (Partido Liberal Colombiano)

Major parties

  • Alternative Democratic Pole (Polo Democratico Alternativo)
  • Social National Unity Party/Party of the U (Partido Social de Unidad Nacional, also known as Partido de la U)
  • Radical Change Party (Partido Cambio Radical)

Minor parties

  • Center Option Party (Partido Opcion Centro)
  • Citizens' Convergence (Convergencia Ciudadana)
  • Democratic Colombia Party (Partido Colombia Democratica)
  • For the Country of our Dreams - Penalosist List(Por el Pais que sonamos - Penalosistas)
  • Indigenous Social Alliance Movement (Movimiento Alianza Social Indigena)
  • Liberal Opening (Movimiento Apertura Liberal)
  • Living Colombia Movement (Movimiento Colombia Viva)
  • Mira Movement (Movimiento Mira)
  • MORAL (MORAL - Movimiento de Renovacion Liberal)
  • National Movement (Movimiento Nacional)
  • National Salvation Movement (Movimiento de Salvacion Nacional)
  • People's Participation Movement (Movimiento de Participacion Popular)
  • Progressive National Movement (Movimiento Nacional Progresista)
  • Regional Integration Movement (Movimiento Integracion Regional)
  • ALAS - Team Colombia (Alas - Equipo Colombia)

There were almost 80 parties in Colombia that didn't have representation in the Congress, according to the 1991 constitutional reform to promote minority representation and oust bipartitism. This proved to be counterproductive.

Under the Political Reform of 2002, any party that doesn't get at least 2% of the vote to the Senate or of the electoral quotient to its circumscription to the House of Representatives, is legally dead. This is to promote neater debates and ideologically clear positions in the Congress.
