National Electoral Council (Venezuela)
The National Electoral Council , or CNE, is the institution in charge of all electoral processes that take place in Venezuela.
Its five principal members are elected by a majority vote of the unicameral Nacional Assembly and all its rulings have to be agreed by a majority (three out of five) of these principal members. At present the principal members are Tibisay Lucena (President), Janeth Hernandez (Vice President), Sandra Oblitas, Vicente Diaz Silva and German Yepez. See: CNE Profiles
The CNE has been at the center of the current political debate in Venezuela, as the opposition has tried several times to oust President Hugo Chavez. See: Venezuelan recall referendum of 2004, Venezuelan parliamentary election, 2005 and Venezuelan presidential election, 2006.
