2001 southern Peru earthquake

The 2001 southern Peru earthquake was a magnitude 8.4 earthquake that occurred at 20:33:14 UTC on Saturday, June 23, 2001, Latitude 16.26S, Longitude 73.64W and affected the Peruvian regions of Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna. It was the most devastating earthquake in Peru since the catastrophic 1970 Ancash earthquake and globally the largest earthquake since the 1965 Rat Island earthquake.

Despite its large size, the earthquake left a death toll of only 75 persons, including 26 who died as a result of the subsequent tsunami, which also caused the disappearance of 64 people. The low death toll was at least partially because the tsunami affected mostly tourist towns out of season and hit at low tide. Approximately 2,700 persons were affected by the earthquake, 17,500 houses were destroyed and 35,550 left damaged in the areas surrounding the cities of Arequipa and Tacna, and the town of Camana. The earthquake was also felt with great intensity in northern Chile.
