Luis Carlos Restrepo

Luis Carlos Restrepo is a Colombian psychiatrist, philosopher and politician, former High Commissioner for Peace in the government of President Alvaro Uribe. His duties are to negotiate with the armed groups part of the Colombian armed conflict. He was in charge of the demobilization process of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) paramilitary groups in 2006-2007. He has published several books about the relation between violence in Colombia and psychological matters. He is currently handling the negotiations seeking a humanitarian exchange between some 50 hostages held by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla and some 500 guerrillas imprisoned by the government.

His nephew Sebastian Restrepo (son of neurosurgeon Gerardo Restrepo Ramirez) was a veteran paramedic in the U.S. Army. He was killed in Afghanistan, when his base was surprise attacked on July 22, 2007.
