Spotted Nothura
The Spotted Nothura Nothura maculosa is a type of Tinamou commonly found in dry savanna habitats up to 2,300m altitude. It may also be found in temperate grassland habitats. This species is native to central and southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina in South America.
Subspecies
The Spotted Nothura has eight subspecies as follows:
Nominate race Nothura maculosa maculosa occurs from south-east Brazil to north-east Argentina
Nothura maculosa cearensis occurs in southern Ceara, Brazil
Nothura maculosa major occurs in eastern Brazil
Nothura maculosa paludivaga occurs in central Paraguay and north-central Argentina
Nothura maculosa pallida occurs in north-west Argentina
Nothura maculosa annectens occurs in eastern Argentin
Nothura maculosa submontana occurs in south-west Argentina
Nothura maculosa nigroguttata occurs in southern Argentina
Characteristics
The Spotted Nothura is approximately 24 cm (9 in) in length. The upperparts are brown streaked buff. The underparts are buff streaked with black and brown on the breast, and barring to the flanks. Its crown is black streaked buff and the throat is white. The overall hue in colour varies greatly over its range; in part caused by the differences in soil at the specific localities. It and the closely related Chaco Nothura are the only nothuras with barring to both webs of the primaries. The legs are dull yellowish-grey or brown.
