Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands

Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands, Princess of Orange-Nassau , is the first child of Willem-Alexander, Prince of Orange, the heir apparent to the throne of the Netherlands, and Princess Maxima of the Netherlands, his spouse.

All children of Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Maxima will bear the style Royal Highness and titles Prince (Princess) of the Netherlands and Prince (Princess) of Orange-Nassau . Following the tradition, Princess Amalia is styled as "The Hereditary Princess of Orange" ; she will become the Princess of Orange when her father accedes to the throne.

Life

Princess Amalia was born in the Bronovo Hospital in The Hague. She lives with her parents and her younger sisters Alexia and Ariane at Villa Eikenhorst on the royal estate, De Horsten, in Wassenaar. On June 12, 2004 she was baptised by Reverend Carel ter Linden in the Grote, or St. Jacob's, Church in The Hague. Her godparents are her uncle, Prince Constantijn of the Netherlands, Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, Marc ter Haar (her father's friend), Herman-Diederik Tjeenk Willink (Vice-president of the Council of State), Samantha van Welderen Baroness Rengers-Deane (her mother's friend) and her uncle, Martin Zorreguieta.

Given names

The official origins of her given names:

Catharina has been speculated to be after Henriette Catharina van Nassau

Amalia is after Amalia of Solms-Braunfels

Beatrix is after her paternal grandmother Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands

Carmen is in honour of her maternal grandmother

Victoria is after her godmother Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden

Succession to the Throne

She is second in line to the Dutch throne, and because the Netherlands is under full lineal primogeniture she will not be replaced in the line of succession by any future children of her parents. So, providing her father and grandmother, the Queen, predecease her or abdicate correspondingly, and she does not marry without permission of Parliament, she will become Queen of the Netherlands. She is in the line of succession to the British Throne as she is a direct descendent of Duchess Augusta of Brunswick, elder sister of King George III. In accordance with the British Act of Settlement of 1701, her father was removed from the line of succession after he married a Roman Catholic.
