Countess attended UCLA in his home state of California where he had an outstanding season as a freshman, with a 1.02 goals against average, good for a second in the Pacific Ten Conference.
Upon completing his freshman year, he joined the Major League Soccer (MLS) Project-40 program. In August 2001, he joined New York MetroStars.
